ATHLETIC HANDS - HUMAN STORIES

Since photography emerged in the mid-nineteenth century, this medium has become a means of exploring and revealing the human condition. In this body of work, I focus on one of the body's most expressive forms—the hands.

These black-and-white photographs isolate athletes' hands, transforming them into symbols of strength, vulnerability, and resilience. My interest lies not in the event itself, but in the moments that hands frame the competition—brief passages where emotion, determination, and grace become visible.

Texture is central to my visual language. Chalk embedded on skin, frayed athletic tape, scars, calluses, and prominent veins become evidence of commitment and sacrifice. In a culture often focused on results, I am more interested in the process: the repetition, recovery, and persistence that shape both athlete and body.

Like life's challenges, athletic pursuits demand instinct, discipline, and an unending desire to improve. Through strong tonal contrast and careful attention to detail, I sought to create intimate, contemplative photographs to invite viewers to connect with the emotions carried within the hands, rather than with the spectacle of the event's outcome.

Ultimately, this work explores how our pursuits leave visible marks upon us. Through the unspoken language of the hands, these photographs become meditations on the stories of our shared humanity. (to read more about the collection click here).
